Braemar Gathering Exhibition

In 2008 we are pleased to announce that there will be a special exhibition about The Braemar Gathering.

The Braemar Gathering can trace its roots back to the time of King Malcolm Canmore (1031-1093) and the games have been run similar to their present form since the year 1800.

In 1848, the Gathering was held in mid September to enable Queen Victoria, who was coming to Balmoral for the first time, to attend. The Queen enjoyed the event and she became Patron of the games, regularly attended the games thereafter.

From the time of her first appearance at the Gathering Queen Victoria took a close interest in the event. These close links continue today and The Royal Family attend the Gathering each year on the first Saturday in September.

The Braemar Gathering exhibition features striking photographs of members of The Royal Family attending the games as well as the many competitors who participate.

The athletic dancers and their wonderful dress uniforms, the colourful pipe bands, the tug of war teams and the magnificent heavy event partipants are all featured. You can also learn about the history of the dances and the origins of the heavy events.
